Exchange a Shield: match the icon and spend the items

A Shield needs a Library Book Card, a Parchment Scroll and the specific third item shown on that Shield. Spending a Dark Detector also moves its owner back three Loyalty spaces.

This hypothetical situation was written by the wiki editors from the cited rules. It is an explanation, not a publisher ruling or a recorded playtest.

Starting situation

Hypothetical example: Ravenclaw holds a Library Book Card, one Parchment Scroll and the Dark Detector, has no Shield yet, and is on Loyalty space five. All other House players are below five. Ravenclaw legally lands on a Shield space whose Shield shows the Dark Detector icon.

Resolve it step by step

  1. Read the actual Shield icon first. A D.A. Coin Shield requires a D.A. Coin; the Dark Detector is not a substitute. This example uses a Dark Detector Shield.

  2. Confirm possession of all three required items while on the Shield space: Library Book Card, Parchment Scroll and Dark Detector.

  3. Relinquish the three items and take the Shield. Showing the items without spending them is not the exchange.

  4. Because the Dark Detector was used, move Ravenclaw’s Loyalty pawn back three spaces, from five to two. Return the Detector to its Side Board place; if another House player were already at five or above, it would instead pass directly to that player under the transfer rule.

  5. In this scenario nobody remains at Loyalty five or higher. Apply the Room of Requirement closure rule and remove its piece.

  6. Count Ravenclaw’s collected Shields. This is the first, so play continues. Collecting any second Shield would satisfy that House player’s victory condition.

Result

Ravenclaw gains one Shield, spends all three items, drops to Loyalty space two and releases the Detector. The Room closes in this particular state because every House player is now below five.

Common mistakes

  • The third item is not freely chosen: follow the Shield’s printed icon.
  • Do not require one Shield of each type. The rule says any two Defence Shields.
  • The three-space Loyalty penalty is tied to relinquishing the Dark Detector, not to every Shield exchange.
