A Hogwarts Token gives a later, matching Explore action

Use a token acquired on a previous turn, return it first and immediately Explore with a matching card before or after the Main Action. A token obtained this turn must wait.

This hypothetical situation was written by the wiki editors from the cited rules. It is an explanation, not a publisher ruling or a recorded playtest.

Starting situation

Hypothetical sequence: a House player obtains the Charms Hogwarts Token during turn A. The player still holds it and a Charms-type card at the start of their next turn, B. They want an extra Explore action as well as their normal Main Action.

Resolve it step by step

  1. At the end of turn A, retain the token. Do not spend it for an extra Explore during the turn in which it was obtained.

  2. During turn B, choose whether to use the token before or after the Main Action. This example uses it before the Main Action; it does not create a separate turn.

  3. Check that the card’s type matches the returned token: Charms in this example. Merely having a movement value or a thematically related spell is insufficient.

  4. Return the token to its original Main Board space, then immediately take Explore with the matching card. Apply the normal Explore movement and effect rules and the actual card’s conditions.

  5. Complete the chosen Main Action under its normal eligibility rules. The token Explore is additional; it does not replace the requirement to choose one Main Action for the turn.

Result

The token from turn A can provide one matching Explore on turn B, either before or after that turn’s Main Action. The player spends a matching card and returns the token; it is not free movement and does not allow immediate reuse of a newly obtained token.

Common mistakes

  • A House player can hold at most one Hogwarts Token; return the old one to its original space before taking another.
  • Do not interrupt a Main Action halfway with the token: its specified timing is before or after the Main Action.
  • If a card permits a second card, finish the first card’s movement and/or effect before playing that second card.
